Ericsson at Berkeley SkyDeck: The Future of Connected and Autonomous Drones

SkyDeck and Golden Bear Industry Partner Ericsson teamed up to bring together a panel event on The Future of Connected and Autonomous Drones.

“Mobile networks are uniquely positioned to improve the safety of drone applications, as well as to enable beyond visual line-of-sight operations. Our particular interest is in low-altitude drone operations, because existing terrestrial mobile networks can be used to provide network coverage. We are focusing our work on two aspects: radio connectivity and support services for drone traffic management aka UTM.”

Attila Takacs

Director of Innovation, Ericsson Silicon Valley

The panel was moderated by Chris Hermanowicz, a strategic investor for NTT Docomo and NTT Group, and featured a lively discussion between panelists from industry, venture capital, and academia, including:

  •     Xingqin Lin, Senior Researcher and Standards Delegate with Ericsson Research
  •     Emilien Marchand, Strategic Engagement Manager, A^3 by Airbus Group
  •     William Pryor, Founding Engineer, Skycatch
  •     Raja Sengupta, Professor of Systems, Transportation Engineering, UC Berkeley
  •     Aaron Bailey, Head of Business Development, Iris Automation

Following the panel, startup companies Iris Automation and Converge Industries presented on their current status and how their work may be impacted by likely regulation updates in the done industry.
