SkyDeck Holds Fireside Chat with Brett Wilson of TubeMogul
Brett Wilson, UC Berkeley alum and CEO of TubeMogul, an enterprise software company for digital branding, spoke at SkyDeck in a Fireside Chat with Executive Director Caroline Winnett.
Brett reflected on an important factor of his company’s growth when he looked to SkyAdvisor and Bee Partners Managing Partner Michael Berolzheimer for financial guidance in the company’s seed round. He joked that he was grateful that although Brett had beat out Michael’s company in the Business Plan Competition when they were both at Haas, Michael still decided to become TubeMogul’s first investor. “Bee Partners invested in our team, and not just the idea. Without Michael, TubeMogul wouldn’t be here,” said Brett.
Brett talked about the unique relationship between Founders and investors, as well as the importance of transparency and honesty. The discussion also covered TubeMogul going public, co-founder relationships, and how to deal with the ups and downs of running an early-stage business.
The advice and information provided was not industry-specific, and many SkyTeams walked away with a sense of comfort and confidence knowing that Wilson had once been in their shoes.
Following the presentation, there was a Q&A session during which SkyTeam members were able to ask questions relating to their experiences so far. One piece of advice that Brett gave was to encourage them to take full advantage of being in an environment such as SkyDeck. To take time away from the everyday grind and attend workshops and social events in order to meet people and trade ideas. He stressed that these relationships are valuable and may result in future hires and/or future investment. He stated that they “also provide the opportunity to test yourself and your hypothesis.”
SkyDeck is grateful to Brett for taking the time to speak to our teams. We hope to have similar events in the near future. If you are a Founder and interested in speaking at a Fireside Chat for SkyTeams, please let us know.
