Employment Law Lecture, Hosted by Venable LLP

Employment Law Lecture, Hosted by Venable LLP

Earlier this month, the current SkyDeck cohort attended a lecture hosted by Robert Pepple, Esq., an Employment Law attorney from Venable LLP.  His presentation, “Growing Pains: Employment Law Basics for Entrepreneurs” covered the basics of California wage and hour laws, including how to properly classify employees as exempt or non-exempt, the rules surrounding minimum wages and overtime, vacation policies, and meal and rest break rules.  Over the course of an hour, Rob explained the importance of a start-up company’s policies maturing as the company grows.

Following the presentation, Rob hosted a Q&A session on the topics he covered and other aspects of employment law.  Among the questions posed was further clarification on the most terrifying aspect of his presentation – that most people in the audience (and most people reading this newsletter) can be sued personally by current and former employees for failing to comply with wage and hour laws.

Throughout the Q&A portion, Venable LLP’s Nikhil Matani, Esq., provided additional, business-related, perspective on the topics discussed. Venable LLP hosts monthly “office hours” at SkyDeck in which SkyTeams can discuss specific scenarios for professional guidance.
